One of the most important aspects of the free press is the media’s ability to hold the government to account over its supposed mistakes – but when was the last time you actually saw some good news on the front of your morning paper?
Contrary to popular belief, the Conservatives don’t actually hate poor people. Likewise, Labour aren’t diehard Communists, the Greens care about more than just legalising marijuana, and UKIP don’t want to deport all foreigners.
Politics gets a bad rep amongst the general public, and that’s one of the main reasons why so many are politically apathetic. A big part of what we want to do is to change the perception of mainstream politics amongst young people – or simply those outside the “Westminster bubble.”
Our “mythbusters” series, along with opinion pieces, quizzes, and neutral education pieces, aim to challenge this notion. Whilst political awareness and education can help the public to cut through political jargon and decipher what they really mean, so too can it help us keep an eye on the oft hyperbolic media.
At TalkPolitics, we believe that for the sake of progress, we should be working with politicians and papers, and not against them.
