Registering to Vote in a General Election

Our central aim here at Talk Politics is to end voter apathy. We, therefore, believe everyone should get involved on polling day. Only with a high turnout can we give those who’ll govern us for the next five years the legitimacy both we and they deserve.

Here is a helpful guide for you ahead of the upcoming General Election.

How do you register?

To be eligible to vote, all you need to do is head over to the UK Government’s “Register to Vote” website. There you’ll be taken through a simple step by step process to ensure you’re eligible to have a say in this country’s future.

What will I need to provide?

On the Register to Vote website, you’ll need to provide the following:

  • Full legal name
  • Address (and details of prior addresses)
  • National Insurance number
  • Nationality
  • Contact details
  • How you intend to vote

Then you press submit and give yourself a pat on your back; you’ve signed up to take part in a great thing called democracy.

If you want to register by post, you can do so with these files.

Make sure you register as soon as possible since the deadline often falls a couple of weeks before the nation goes to the polls!

Am I eligible?

According to the Electoral Commission, to be eligible to vote in a general election you must fulfil the following criteria:

  • 18 or over
  • be a British citizen, a qualifying Commonwealth citizen or a citizen of the Republic of Ireland
  • Not subject to any legal incapacity to vote

There are some further criteria laid out well on the commission’s website.
